How to read a solar quote starts with one rule: the headline price is marketing; the line items are the contract. A proper proposal shows system size in kW, dollars per watt ($/W), named equipment, production assumptions, and cash price separate from financed price. If any of those are missing, you are not comparing quotes—you are comparing moods.
A solar quote is like a restaurant menu with no prices on the entrees but a bold number at the bottom. You need the itemized check before you tip.

7 line items to check on every solar quote
System size (kW) and price per watt ($/W)
Every quote should state DC system size in kilowatts and total contract price divided by watts. Without $/W, you cannot compare a 7.2 kW bid against an 8.4 kW bid—or spot an upsized array you did not need.
What good looks like:
Example: 8.4 kW at $28,560 cash = $3.40/W before incentives. Red flag: total price only, no kW, or $/W that excludes MPU and battery add-ons buried elsewhere.
Cash price vs financed price (dealer fees)
Financed solar quotes often inflate 15–30% above cash through dealer fees rolled into the loan. Sales decks lead with monthly payment; the cash number hides on page nine.
What good looks like:
Two columns: cash price and financed all-in cost with APR, term, and dealer fee disclosed. The FTC consumer guide on home solar recommends getting multiple written quotes and comparing total cost—not just monthly payment.
Named equipment: panels, inverter, racking
“Tier-one panels” is not a SKU. You need manufacturer, model number, wattage per module, inverter type (string, micro, hybrid), and quantity. Generic language lets installers swap gear after you sign.
What good looks like:

Production estimate and guarantee
Annual kWh forecast drives ROI. If production is inflated 20%, payback looks magical on paper and disappointing on your utility bill.
What good looks like:
Year-one kWh estimate with tilt, azimuth, and shade assumptions documented—ideally from PVWatts or equivalent. Ask for a production guarantee: if output falls short, who pays the difference? Counterintuitive stat: Berkeley Lab’s Tracking the Sun shows installed prices vary widely for similar systems—production assumptions vary just as much.
Electrical upgrades (MPU, subpanel, trenching)
Main panel upgrade (MPU), new subpanel, service feeder work, and trenching for ground mounts often appear only after site survey—or never, until the change order arrives.
Expert opinion:
I treat any quote without a preliminary electrical scope as incomplete. A $3,000 MPU surprise turns a “great deal” into an average one overnight. Get “MPU required: yes/no/unknown after site visit” in writing.
Permits, interconnection, and warranties
Soft costs belong on the quote: permitting, utility interconnection fees, HOA packets, and who pays if the utility requires a study. Warranties should split workmanship (installer) vs equipment (manufacturer).
What good looks like:
10+ year workmanship, 25-year panel performance, inverter warranty length named. Roof penetration warranty separate from general workmanship. The Department of Energy tracks permitting and interconnection as major soft-cost buckets—if they are “included” with no detail, ask what included means.
Incentives, tax credits, and net cost
Federal ITC (Investment Tax Credit) and local rebates should appear as separate lines—not baked into a “discount” that disappears if eligibility fails. Net cost after incentives is what matters for payback.
What good looks like:

How to read a solar quote in three passes
Pass one: $/W and kW. Pass two: equipment SKUs and production. Pass three: cash vs finance, MPU scope, and net cost after incentives. If a rep pushes you to sign before pass three, that is the quote telling you something important.
